Vietnamese’s Latin

You already know how this works
English has two layers: water and aquatic, heart and cardiac. One everyday, one learned. Vietnamese has exactly the same thing — and you don’t have to learn the principle, only the words.

The two layers aren’t used at the same moments. Piling learned words into a market conversation sounds pedantic — like saying “I have cephalalgia” to a friend.
One morpheme, its words
Sorted by position: the same morpheme doesn’t play the same role in each. The order shown is the order of usefulness, computed on the corpus.

One syllable is not one meaning
This is the real difficulty. Vietnamese merged distinctions Chinese kept: one syllable covers several unrelated morphemes. Here are the ones you actually meet — not a dictionary’s.

The tone is part of the morpheme
Miss the tone and you miss the morpheme — so you miss the word. These pairs differ by nothing but the tone.
thế the acute accent force, momentum, situation
thể the hook body, form
đồng the grave accent same, together
động the dot below to move, to act
The test
Words never shown during practice, built from morphemes you’ve all met. It’s the only way to check the promise instead of repeating it.
